The Mel Gibson Mess—and he's not the only one

Forgate this The Mel Gibson Mess—and he's not the only one

Forget cheating scandals. Forget the whole rehab thing. With Mel Gibson joining the ranks of celebrities accused of smacking, punching, and choking their women, the "issue du jour" is domestic violence.

This week, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department started investigating charges by Gibson's former girlfriend, Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva, 40, that on January 6th he hit her twice in the face—hard enough to knock out a tooth, break a veneer, and cause a concussion—all while she was holding their 3-month-old daughter, Lucia (over whom the couple have been bitterly fighting for custody). Now Radar.com reports that it has obtained an audiotape in which he actually admits to hitting her, saying she "deserved" it. And apparently there are more tapes. "Oksana was so concerned for her life after Mel made death threats," a source tells the site, "that she resorted to covertly recording him."

Things are getting spicier by the moment. According to People.com today, our 54-year-old action hero—who has seven other children by his former wife—is lunging back, charging Oksana with trying to extort money from him by selling the tapes, which reportedly contain other choice bits like: "I will bury you in the rose garden," and, "I am going to come burn the f--cking house down...but you will b-- me first," (referring to a sex act). At one point he calls her a "pig in heat," then a "synthetic person" whose every part is "fake," while spewing racial slurs.

No spoiler alerts here, as the plot has yet to unfold. But what do we make of all the recent domestic abuse leaking out from Malibu mansions, Aspen ski chalets, and other playgrounds of the rich and famous? "Before, the media tended to back away from these stories, so it's definitely a good thing that the crimes are being reported," says Gael Strack, CEO of the National Family Justice Center Alliance (see below) and a domestic violence prosecutor in the San Diego City Attorney's Office for 17 years. "The question is, what are the consequences? It would be nice to see the guys learning something from what they did."

I couldn't have said it better. Certainly the women who have pressed charges against their popular leading men deserve a standing ovation—that takes guts. But it's true that, in Hollywood, a domestic violence conviction seems to be more of an inconvenience than anything else. Half the time, the flash from the mug shot has barely faded before it's, next movie, new chick.
Take a look at how domestic violence has affected the lives of these hotshots...

Mel Gibson: Russian spying at its best?
So far, Gibson—who started dating Grigorieva after his wife of 30 years, Robyn, filed for divorce in April of 2009—denies the abuse. But the chorus is getting stronger with Polish porn star Violet Kowal (who claims they had sex during Grigorieva’s pregnancy) calling him threatening and aggressive. As for Oksana’s tapes, they may not be admissible in court because in California both parties must be aware that a recording is underway. But attorney Gael Strack says Oksana may still have the advantage. "The thing is, they’re there. And the minute he goes, 'I never said those things,’ or, ‘I'm not a violent person,' prosecutors and attorneys can basically say: Liar, liar, your pants are on fire." The next time Oksana needs a restraining order, Strack says, she can request permission to tape her abuser, thanks to a new state law. Strack also recommends that victims save threatening phone and text messages as well as Facebook postings, which can be equally damming. "The more documentation the better," she says. "It's usually his word against hers, and judges want evidence."

Expensive Face Creams: Worth the Cash?

It is a beautiful face for Expensive Face Creams: Worth the Cash?

I have never really gotten the legions of women who are devoted to certain extremely pricey face creams.
La Mer Creme de la Mer, for example, sells for a whopping $1,390 per container!

More from The Stir: The Chemicals in Your Cosmetics

And while most of us aren't exactly delving into our life savings for face cream, I know plenty of women with relatively modest means who spend hundreds of dollars on Arbonne or Estee Lauder or Shiseido or Lancome face products.

The question I have for you --

Are expensive face creams and serums really worth the money?

I've tried a bunch of them and here's what I think ...

More from The Stir: How to Get Super Shiny Hair

Thanks to my mom, for whom shopping at expensive department stores is a vocation, I have an enormous bag full of samples of pretty much every face cream and serum known to man. I have used all of them at one time or another. And I can't really say I've seen any difference between them and the drugstore brands whatsoever. I've wanted to. But I didn't.

In addition, as a blogger, I've been sent countless face creams and lotions and masques to review, most of them well beyond my normal budget. I've used them until they were gone -- I'm frugal that way. And still?

The only time I've personally noticed a difference was when a friend who also happened to be an Arbonne consultant conned, I mean, talked me into trying the Arbonne face regimen for a weekend. After only a day or two, I noticed a huge difference in my skin. It felt great!

More from The Stir: Lindsay Lohan Gets a Fabulous New Prison Wardrobe
The trouble was that the entire line of products I needed to buy in order to get that feeling added up to more than $300. The other problem was that the regimen involved five or six different products at morning and at night. And what mother has time for that?!

So for me, it has been (drumroll please) ...

Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser (Drugstore.com, $6.59). Seriously. I love this stuff. It cleans my face and removes makeup without making my skin feel tight afterward.

I follow it up with Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion with SPF 15 and Alpha Hydroxy (Drugstore.com, $11.99).
And lately, I've been using eye cream, too, as a preventative measure, although I'm not seeing any major results.

First Steps: Haiti Six Months After the Quake

We are saw this the strange First Steps: Haiti Six Months After the Quake

Wilfred Macena is a handsome 25-year-old with a quick laugh and a nearly relentless smile. On the 12th of January, he was working as a welder when the earth shook, and a wall caved in right on top of him. His femur shattered. He was left alone to pull up the bottom half of his leg and carry it with him on a horrific seven-day journey, during which he nearly died. Luckily, the cousin he finally reached had a vehicle. But Macena's wounds could not be healed with a simple ride to a hospital. Even before the quake, Haiti was desperately lacking in quality doctors. So in order to find proper medical care, Macena — like anyone with any means in Haiti — had to find a way to get out of the country.
Six months after the devastating quake rocked one of the poorest nations in the developing world, downed power lines are still draped over the steel bars and jagged concrete mounds that litter the Port-au-Prince landscape. The recovery has barely begun. Yet amidst the rubble, a hospital now stands, filled with volunteer doctors and nurses diligently tending to the still-healing wounds of the Haitian people.

Project Medishare, an organization with ties to the University of Miami and more than twenty years of experience in Haiti, has flown these volunteers down twice a week on chartered flights ever since that horrific day, to provide desperately lacking medical care to those who need it most.

Haiti has produced many great doctors, but relatively few remain in the country. With bountiful opportunities in places like the US and Europe, qualified specialists are often tempted by the high incomes and quality of life they receive by practicing abroad. This leaves Haiti with a brain drain: There are no neurosurgeons or heart-surgeons practicing in the entire country, no designated burn-units, and few resources for pediatric care. Project Medishare is looking to change this by building a training hospital to produce the next generation of Haitian based medical practitioners.

Macena is one of the thousands of patients served by Project Medishare, and if his story is any indication of the potential, there is reason for hope. The Dominican doctor who treated the young man referred him to Project Medishare for treatment — right in his homeland. At Medishare's field hospital, his severed leg was properly cared for, and he was fitted for a custom prosthesis (see a slide show here). Within a day of receiving his new leg, Wilfred not only walked, but also kicked around a soccer ball.

When his recovery was complete and the day came to return home, Wilfred, an above-the-knee amputee, walked into the arms of his wife and young child with the pride of not only a new leg but also a new job. His attitude and recovery was such an inspiration that the Project Medishare team offered him a position to help train other Haitians who lost their limbs take their first steps towards recovery.
In a country where hundreds of thousands are now shielding themselves in tent cities, rebuilding will take years and there are no quick solutions. Without a strong infrastructure or adequate medical care Haiti's growth will be stymied. Yet amidst the challenge, stories like Wilfred's' provide a sense of what is possible.
Project Medishare has saved countless lives since the disaster, and has recently moved the field hospital to a permanent structure. Their work is now to build a comprehensive critical care hospital and training facility, which will not only save lives but also help create a sustainable medical infrastructure for generations of Haitians to come.

Macena is a testament to their work and continues to work with Project Medishare's medical team in fulfilling their mission to help all Haitians rise up and walk again.

After the quake there was an amazing outpouring of support both nationally and internationally, with more than half of American households contributing to the relief effort. As the cameras turned to other disasters, however, so too did most people's attention. Six months later, Haiti is left in the infancy of the rebuilding process, with decades of work ahead.

Rhea Kapoor stands out at the music release of ‘Aisha’

Watches this Rhea Kapoor stands out at the music release of ‘Aisha’

Despite not having a single hit in her kitty, actress Sonam Kapoor has made her presence felt in Bollywood with her elegance and style but this time it was her sister Rhea who impressed us with her subtle chic sense of style and poise with her first formal public appearances on Sunday, at the music release of the forthcoming movie ‘Aisha’. She chose the midway between a dire professional look and a young breezy style with a a pair of slim-fitted black pants from Alexander Wang, a white top from Zara and an asymmetrically-cut semi-formal jacket with white piping from Elizabeth & James. She completed her look with smart booties from Alexander Wang and earrings borrowed from her mother for the evening.
Made under dad Anil Kapoor’s banner, the movie has the honor of being Rhea’s first production venture. Rhea began her career as an assistant director with Ayan Mukherjee in Wake up Sid.
Bollywood stylist Rajat Tangri comments on the two sisters’ style funda saying, “While Sonam’s style is more out there and fun, Rhea sticks to understated and functional fashion. Their dressing styles clearly reflect the professions they have chosen. Sonam wears a lot of girlie dresses, pinks and frills just like a la-di-dah movie star. But Rhea is seen in pants and interesting jackets, quite like a young producer who attended school in New York. Even when Rhea has done the girlie dressing routine, on red carpet-outings with her family, she has stuck to the classic little black dress.”
Tangri adds, “What made Rhea’s style stand out at the event was that she chose the smart style of an uptown professional, true to her part as a producer. On the other hand, the cast of the movie - all girls her age, including Sonam, Lisa Haydon, Ira Dubey and Amrita Puri - wore feminine silk dresses and sequinned minis.”
Rhea had recently revealed her love for tailored trousers on Twitter, when she asked Sonam to get her some from Scotland. Sonam has been shooting in Scotland for Mausam with Shahid Kapur.

FIFA World Cup 2010 final: Bollywood stars set to watch the Grand Finale

Watches this FIFA World Cup 2010 final: Bollywood stars set to watch the Grand Finale

Mumbai: Soccer fever is at its peak and our Bollywood stars are all set to watch the biggest match of the year as Spain takes on the Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final in Johannesburg tonight. While Bollywood actors like Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Shah Rukh Khan and Imran Khan have already reached Johannesburg to watch the World Cup final between Netherlands and Spain, some football lovers from the industry had to give the match a miss.

Anil Kapoor had almost cancelled his plans.

Sighed Anil, 'Some work had come up. It looked like I wouldn't be able to go to Johannesburg, though I had packed and booked seats at the stadium. But, I finally did make it. I am the brand ambassador and this is the biggest sports event,' said Anil as he left for South Africa.

Another football enthusiast, Dino Morea, too seemed unsure of making it to Johannesburg. 'I'm in London, all set to go. But my air ticket is not confirmed, if it doesn't happen, then I'll just have to watch it on television,' he said.

The model turned actor is a huge football fan. 'I play football and I love watching the sport. I was supporting Italy as I am half-Italian. Now, I'm supporting Spain because they have never won the Cup,' he added.

The football fever has never been more pronounced in Bollywood.

Sanjay Dutt left his pregnant wife in Mumbai for the finals. He will be in South Africa with his two non-filmy best-friends.

'I wouldn't miss the World Cup for the world. I'm the hugest football fan. I place it above cricket in my scheme of joy. I watched the silliest of games in the Cup. For the finals, I had to be here (in Johannesburg),' said the actor.

Dutt is rooting for Spain all the way. So is Jackky Bhagnani, producer Vashu Bhagnani's son has apparently secured some of the best seats in the stadium for himself and his five friends from Mumbai.

Speaking from Johannesburg, Jackky exulted, 'Man, I've the best view possible! I could never afford these seats, they are among the best in the stadium. An industrialist friend from Russia got me these seats. I can't begin to express my excitement, I feel like an eight-year-old who has got his favourite toy. Me and my friends have our t-shirts, caps and flags ready. We're rooting for Spain.'

Adding to Jackky's excitement is the fact that this is the first FIFA World Cup match he's attending.

Shah Rukh Khan and Imran Khan have already tweeted about their presence in Johannesburg for the finals. However, Shah Rukh's best friend, director Karan Johar will not be able to attend the match.

Other football lovers from Bollywood who had to miss the event are actors Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, who are shooting in Colombo and Delhi, respectively.

The 9 0'Clock News – Cheryl diagnosed with malaria

Now we saw the picture about the chery The 9 0'Clock News – Cheryl diagnosed with malaria

Cheryl diagnosed with malaria
Cheryl Cole has contracted malaria, it was reported today. The X Factor judge was diagnosed at hospital on Sunday night following her collapse at a photo shoot over the weekend. It was initially thought that Cheryl was merely suffereing from severe exhaustion and a stomach virus, but when she started to drift in and out of consciousness it became apparent soemthing more serious was wrong. Although malaria can be deadly, it's thought the strain Cheryl has is one of the weaker ones and it's been caught in plenty of time to be treated. Unfortunately, though, it looks likely the Girls Aloud star will miss the remaining X Factor live auditions while she stays at home recovering. Cheryl is thought to have contracted malaria while on holiday in Tanzania with friend Derek Hough recently. She had taken anti-malaria tablets but they failed to prevent her picking up the disease. Poor poor Cheryl. We hope she gets well soon.

Jedward's Edward Grimes has been told he must rest his busted leg for at least four weeks, but he's refusing to let the injury interfere with their planned tour. "We have to go on for our fans," he said yesterday. "We don't want to be like U2 - we'll carry on even if I have to go on stage on crutches." Talking about his fall at T4 On The Beach, Edward admits, "It was the most painful thing that's ever happened to me.I was crying like a baby in the ambulance and I kept thinking my leg would snap if I stretched it out." Rather adorably, Edward says he refused an offer of morphine from the doctors, saying indignantly, "I'm not a druggie!"

Was mother of Ronaldo's baby a surrogate?
The identity of the woman who gave birth to Cristiano Ronaldo's baby son is still a mystery, but it's being rumoured that he used a surrogate. An American surrogate mum and a Danish heiress both announced their pregnancies not long after meeting Ronaldo, but it's not known which - if either - of them is the mummy. Ronaldo claimed yesterday that the mother wishes to remain anonymous, but he is known to have had a fling with the Danish girl AND met up with the surrogate mum while in San Diego. We're still a bit baffled by this whole thing, aren't you?

Time for a T4 On The Beach gallery? Yeah, why not?

We saw the Time for a T4 On The Beach gallery? Yeah, why not?

From birds' nest hair to bust legs to balls on the BBQ to Alexandra Burke's puppy licking her on the mouth, T4 On The Beach was, as ever, a brilliant party. Everyone from JLS to The Saturdays to N-Dubz to Chipmunk to Basshunter to Diana Vickers took to the stage in the sunshine at Weston-super-Mare and entertained the thousands who'd wedged themselves onto a train just to watch their idols. Alexandra Burke boogied in some eye-wateringly tight high-waisted American Apparel shorts with statement shoulder top, while Diana Vickers worked '60s chic in a monochrome graphic dress topped with a mahoossive beehive. Gabriella Cilmi strutted across the soggy sand in a pair of very fancy toe-mould Vivienne Westwood heels and Pixie Lott showed off yet another Lipsy creation with one of heat's flower garlands strung around her neck. Ellie Goulding sizzled in a Topshop lace panelled bodysuit and Tulisa from N-Dubz put the rest of her band to shame in a mint green shift. JLS closed the show with an energetic performance just as the heavens opened, but we don't think the crowd (or us, for that reason) minded when their tops got all wet and clingy... Take a look through the gallery below and tell us whose look you like the best.

The 10 Hottest Good Luck Charms in Sports

we see this The 10 Hottest Good Luck Charms in Sports

A few days after the Lakers won their 16th NBA Championship, Ty Lawson of the Denver Nuggets Tweeted the following:

"I heard if u hit a Kardashian u win a championship.. Kim K holla at me!!! I need ya for 17 min."

He also unselfishly said that, by doing this act, he would be "...willing to take one for the team."

NBA players get a bad rap for being selfish and egotistical. I think Ty proves that he knows how to be a real teammate.

What he was referring to, of course, was the fact that Kim Kardashian was with Reggie Bush when his New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl.

And now her little sister, Khloe, is married to Lamar Odom, who just helped the Lakers win the title.

So, that got us over here at B/R thinking: Who are the top 10 hottest lucky charms in sports today?

Just in case Mr. Lawson doesn't get one of the Kardashians.

Will Angelina Jolie step out of the acting spotlight?

We see the Will Angelina Jolie step out of the acting spotlight?

Like any working mom, Angelina Jolie juggles her career with raising her six children with partner Brad Pitt. And she's been outspoken about wanting to leave acting behind to spend more time with her family. But Jolie remains one of Hollywood's busiest and most in-demand stars, despite her plans to quit her very lucrative gig. USA TODAY takes a look at Jolie's acting declarations.
What she said: In the August 2010 issue of Vanity Fair, Jolie discussed her plans to ditch her day job. "It's not the most important thing in my life. Acting helped me as I was growing up. It helped me learn about myself, helped me travel, helped me understand life, express myself, all those wonderful things," she said. "So I'm very, very grateful, it's a fun job. It's a luxury. Look, I'm at work today in the middle of Venice. But I don't think I'll do it much longer."

What's in the works: Super-producer Scott Rudin has optioned the rights to Cleopatra: A life and is developing the film for and with Angelina Jolie.

What she said: In November 2008, while promoting her Clint Eastwood film Changeling, Jolie told the BBC that "I'm ready to do a few things now and fade away and get ready to be a grandma one day." She added that she plans to "work for a few months" in February, then take a year off. "I won't work again probably for another year," she said. "So maybe it'll be once a year, then maybe it'll be once every three years."

What went down: She did take time off, but not a year. Since that interview, Jolie filmed two major, big-ticket projects, the action thriller Salt and the drama The Tourist. She began shooting Salt in March 2009, and The Tourist in Venice and Paris beginning in February 2010.

What she said: In March 2007, right after adopting her son Pax Thien Jolie-Pitt, she told Vietman's Ho Chi Minh City Law newspaper that she would "stay at home to help Pax adjust to his new life. I have four children and caring for them is the most important thing for me at the moment. I am very proud and happy to be their mother."

What went down: Days after the adoption was finalized, Universal Pictures announced that Jolie would be starring in the action flick Wanted. Jolie arrived in the Czech Republic in May 2007 to start work on the movie.
